CHAPTER 6
Adilyn
Alexâs children were practically leaping out of the ski boots. Charisa was holding Mark's hand, âYou promise you wonât leave?â she asked.
âI wonât. I promise,â he said.
âGood, because Jason and Jaxson keep laughing at me because Iâm scared of the big slopes,â she said.
I felt for her. Her brothers, although a couple of years younger than her, still liked to tease her. Charisa was only thirteen, and from what she said, she lived on a tropical island. Skiing wasnât something sheâd ever done before. Sounded like she wouldâve been okay never doing it. I was glad that Mark was going to be by her side in case fear overtook her.
âMy brother Billy used to tease me all the time too. I used to think he was just being mean, but I found out that in reality he wanted to go skiing with me. Iâm glad I learned how. Now we go and have fun skiing together all the time,â I told her.
She smiled at me. âYou mean they want me with them? They're not just being mean?â
I couldnât guarantee that, but I hoped that was the case. âI think so.â
Charisa looked at Mark. âDo you tease your sister?â she asked.
He shook his head. âNo. Iâm the oldest like you are. We are the ones that get picked on. But think about it. We also get to do everything first. Youâre thirteen and in three years youâll be driving, and your brothers will still have to ride their bikes.â
That did it. She was glowing. âYes. And Iâm going to make them beg me to take them.â
Mark laughed. âSee. Sometimes being the oldest isnât so bad. Now are you ready to hit the slopes with me?â
She nodded and said, âI want to ski as good as Avery. Sheâs thirteen and I heard she skis better than her big brother Michael.â
âIâm sure you can if you practice. But today, letâs not worry about what the others are doing. Letâs just go and have some fun. How does that sound?â he asked.
âOkay. I can do that,â she said. Charisa let go of Mark and turned to me, giving me a tight hug. âThank you, Adilyn. You are making this vacation the very best.â
âIâm glad youâre enjoying it,â I replied.
âI am. And the tree decorating party last night was the best.â She looked up at Mark and added, âEven though you canât sing.â
Now it was Charisaâs turn to tease. But she wasnât joking. Mark couldnât hold a key to save his life. Smiling, I said, âMaybe he will get better with practice. Should we sing more Christmas carols tonight?â
Mark raised his hands and laughed, âNo way. Uncle Brice said if he had to be tortured by that again then I wouldnât be invited to the reunion next year.â
Brice and Lena had entered the lobby with Shaun and Morgan. Shaun said, âDonât feel bad, Mark. You didnât hear Brice singing, did you?â Mark shook his head. âThereâs a good reason for that,â Shaun made a face of someone in pain.
